WordPress Radio Themes vs RadioSiteMaker: An Honest Comparison
Disclosure: RadioSiteMaker is our own product, and so is RadioHost Studio. Method: prices checked on each vendor's own page on 5 November 2026; we list where competitors are the better fit.
If you are building a website for your radio station, you have probably considered WordPress. There are radio-specific themes such as Pro.Radio and OnAir2 that give you a radio station layout.
This is a comparison between the WordPress-plus-radio-theme approach and RadioSiteMaker, a managed platform built for radio stations: cost, features, effort and long-term maintenance, including where WordPress is the better choice.
The WordPress Approach: What It Actually Takes
Step 1: Get hosting
WordPress needs a server. Your choices are shared hosting, managed WordPress hosting, or a VPS you run yourself. Shared is cheapest and least predictable under load; managed costs more and takes care of updates and caching; a VPS gives control and makes you the administrator. Price the plan you would really use.
Step 2: Register a domain
The same on any platform. For a .com, the registry fee alone is $10.97[1] a year; registrars add their own margin, and extensions like .fm cost more.
Step 3: Install WordPress
Most hosts offer one-click installation. You now have a blank WordPress site.
Step 4: Buy and install a radio theme
Pro.Radio, for example, is sold on pro.radio at $98[2] for one site, including a year of support and updates, then $69[3] a year to renew. See our Pro.Radio alternatives guide for a deeper look. Installation means uploading the theme, activating its required plugins and importing demo content.
Step 5: Configure the theme
- Replace the demo content with your station's
- Configure the player with your stream URL
- Build the show schedule and DJ profiles
- Set up the podcast section and blog
- Adjust colours, fonts and layout
- Configure menus, forms and image optimisation
Someone fluent in WordPress gets through this much faster than a beginner. Either way it is the longest part of the job.
Step 6: Install essential plugins
The theme does not cover everything. Typical additions: an SEO plugin, a security plugin, backups, caching, a forms plugin and spam protection. Several have free versions; premium versions renew yearly.
Step 7: Maintain everything
- Core, theme and plugin updates, tested for conflicts
- Security monitoring and login hardening
- Backups, and a tested restore
- PHP version upgrades from your host, which can break older plugins
- Performance as your content grows
When things run smoothly, this is a routine monthly chore. When something breaks after an update, it can take a weekend.

True Cost Comparison
Rather than invent an "average" hosting bill, here is the formula. Fill it in with your own quotes, or use our website cost calculator.
| WordPress + Pro.Radio | RadioSiteMaker | |
|---|---|---|
| Platform / theme | $98 in year one, then $69 a year if you renew support | $99 a year + tax |
| Hosting | Your host's plan | Included |
| Premium plugins | Each one's renewal | Included |
| Domain | Registry fee $10.97+ margin | Same |
| Extra storage | Your host's plan | Add-ons if you exceed 10 GB |
| Your time | Setup plus monthly maintenance | Content only |
The money gap is usually hosting plus plugin renewals. The bigger gap is time: on WordPress, every update is yours to apply and test. For the full picture across all approaches, see our radio station website cost guide.
When WordPress Might Still Make Sense
You need extreme customisation. Membership systems, a large store, or an integration no radio platform offers.
You already have WordPress expertise. If someone on your team knows it well and enjoys maintaining it, the burden is much lighter.
You want to own the code. Some organisations require self-hosting for policy reasons.
You need full layout freedom. Elementor lets you place any element anywhere; RadioSiteMaker gives you themes and options.
Multilingual support is no longer a WordPress-only advantage: RadioSiteMaker sites can run in any of 17 languages without a plugin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I migrate my existing WordPress radio site to RadioSiteMaker?
Yes, by hand. There is no automatic WordPress importer, so you copy your posts, DJ bios, show descriptions and events into the dashboard. Podcast episodes can be imported from your RSS feed, and your stream URL and domain carry over. Our WordPress migration guide covers redirects and the order of steps.
Does RadioSiteMaker support the same level of design customisation as WordPress?
No. You choose from 10 themes and customise colours, fonts, logo and which sections appear, but you do not get pixel-level layout control. If you need more control than that, WordPress is the better fit.
What happens to my website if I cancel RadioSiteMaker?
The site goes offline when the subscription ends, as with any hosted service. Your stream, domain and podcast audio are not tied to RadioSiteMaker, so you can point them elsewhere.
Is RadioSiteMaker SEO-friendly?
Yes. Station sites carry structured data for the station, shows, DJs, events and podcasts, a per-station sitemap and robots.txt, and canonical URLs on your custom domain. You can check any page with our SEO checker.
Can I still use WordPress for other parts of my online presence?
Yes. Some stations keep a separate WordPress blog or forum and link to it from the station site's navigation.
