SAM Broadcaster Alternatives in 2026: Free and Paid Options
Disclosure: RadioSiteMaker and RadioHost Studio are our own products. Method: prices checked on each vendor's own page on 5 November 2026; we list where competitors are the better fit.
The short answer: RadioDJ if you want SAM Broadcaster's automation for nothing, RadioBOSS if you want a paid Windows workhorse, PlayIt Live if you want a gentler start, Mixxx if your shows are live rather than automated, and AzuraCast or a browser-based suite if you would rather not keep a Windows PC awake at all. Prices below are from each vendor's own page, with sources listed at the end.
SAM Broadcaster is desktop playout from Spacial: automation, audio processing, requests, encoding and logging, on Windows. It works, and many stations know it well. The reasons to look elsewhere are the Windows-only footprint, an interface that feels its age, and the fact that the PC running it has to stay on, around the clock.
What Are You Replacing?
- The automation on the same PC — you want another Windows playout tool. Look at RadioDJ, RadioBOSS or PlayIt Live.
- The PC itself — you want automation that runs on a server or in the browser, so a crashed laptop does not take you off air. Look at AzuraCast or RadioHost Studio.
- Only the live-show tool — Mixxx or BUTT.
- The web output — SAM's widgets were always something you bolted onto a website. That is a website decision; see the end of this guide.
Spacial also sells SAM Cloud, a hosted version: Silver is $30[1] a month or $330[2] a year, with 120 listeners[3] at 128 kbps[4], 30 GB[5] and 5 additional DJs[6]. Gold is $90[7] a month with 360 listeners[8] and 50 GB[9]. If you like SAM's workflow but not the PC, price that first.
Quick Comparison
| Software | Price | Platform | Automation | Closest to SAM for… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RadioDJ | Free | Windows | Advanced | Feature match at $0 |
| RadioBOSS | $199[10]–$299[11] one-time | Windows | Advanced | Professional automation |
| PlayIt Live | Free core; Premium bundle £300[12]/year | Windows | Moderate | Modern interface |
| Mixxx | Free | Win/Mac/Linux | None | Live DJ mixing |
| AzuraCast | Free software + server | Linux server, browser UI | Advanced | Self-hosted all-in-one |
| RadioHost Studio | $199/year + tax | Browser | Advanced | Automation with no station PC |
| BUTT | Free | Win/Mac/Linux | None | Simple encode-and-stream |
Alternative 1: RadioDJ — the free feature match
Price: free (donation-supported) | Platform: Windows
RadioDJ is the closest free equivalent to SAM Broadcaster's automation core: database-driven library, rotation rules, event scheduling, request plugins and unattended operation.
The catch: setup requires installing a MySQL/MariaDB database, streaming needs an encoder plugin, and documentation lives in community forums. Budget an afternoon for installation.
Best for: anyone whose main objection to SAM is the price.
Alternative 2: RadioBOSS — the professional upgrade
Price: $199 Standard / $249[13] Advanced / $299 Ultimate (one-time) | Platform: Windows
If your objection is reliability and depth rather than price, RadioBOSS is the serious automation workhorse: rotation logic, hour clocks, streaming to several servers, and operation as a Windows service. The licence is perpetual with a year of updates included. Compare the editions on DJSoft's site; the right one depends on which scheduling and streaming features you need.
Best for: stations that treat Windows automation as mission-critical.
Alternative 3: PlayIt Live — the modern middle ground
Price: free core; the Premium Module Bundle (voice tracking, remote management, advanced scheduling) is £300 a year, or £1,199[14] for a lifetime licence (a November 2026 sale price) | Platform: Windows
The cleanest interface of the Windows playout tools. Start free and pay only if you need the premium modules.
Best for: new stations that want a gentle learning curve.
Alternative 4: Mixxx — for live DJs
Price: free, open source | Platform: Windows, Mac, Linux
If you used SAM mostly for live shows, Mixxx is a better tool for that job: dual decks, EQ, effects, MIDI controller support, and direct Icecast/Shoutcast broadcasting. No scheduling or rotation.
Best for: live-mix shows, and a free option on Mac and Linux desktops.
Alternative 5: AzuraCast — leave the desktop entirely
Price: free software + a Linux server you run
AzuraCast moves the whole station to a server: streaming server, web-based AutoDJ, scheduling and analytics in one self-hosted package, managed from a browser. Requires Docker/Linux basics.
Best for: technical operators ready to stop babysitting a Windows box.
Alternative 6: RadioHost Studio — automation in the browser (our product)
RadioHost Studio does the job SAM does on a PC — library, playlists, clockwheels, week schedule, voice tracking, AutoDJ — in the browser, with the stream included. Live shows go through Live Studio, a mixer in the browser, or through an external encoder (SAM included). $25 a month or $199 a year + tax; the Station plan has 500 concurrent listeners, 30,000 listening hours a month, 10 GB storage, up to 192 kbps, 5 external DJ seats and 10 Live Studio deejays. It also exports SoundExchange CSV reports from the play log.
Where SAM still wins: it is a one-off desktop licence you control, it has integrated audio processing, and it does not depend on an internet connection to keep playing to a local transmitter. Studio's listener and bitrate limits are fixed by the plan. Studio's own guide to broadcasting into it with SAM Broadcaster shows how to keep SAM for live shows during a move.
And BUTT, for the minimalists
If all you need is to get audio from your computer to your streaming server, BUTT (Broadcast Using This Tool) does exactly that — free, cross-platform, tiny. It replaces SAM's encoder, not its automation.
When Staying on SAM Broadcaster Is the Better Choice
- Your station runs fine and the PC is reliable. Migrating playout means rebuilding rotations and categories; do it for a reason.
- You feed a local transmitter. Desktop playout that keeps working through an internet outage matters for FM and LPFM.
- Your team is trained on it. Retraining volunteers is a real cost.
- You rely on SAM-specific features such as its integrated processing or request system.
The Part No Playout Software Handles: Your Website
Whichever tool wins, your listeners see your website: the live player, schedule, DJ profiles, podcasts and events. RadioSiteMaker is a radio station website builder that takes your stream URL — from RadioDJ, RadioBOSS, AzuraCast, Studio or anything else — and reads now-playing metadata from Icecast, SHOUTcast and most hosted platforms. It is $99 a year + tax, separate from Studio. Check your stream with the radio stream tester, and see the integrations list.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free alternative to SAM Broadcaster?
RadioDJ, for automation parity: rotation rules, event scheduling and 24/7 operation at no cost, with a fiddly MySQL-based setup. For live mixing, Mixxx; for a complete server-based station, AzuraCast.
Is SAM Broadcaster still worth buying in 2026?
If you want a mature desktop product with commercial support and integrated processing, and you run Windows, it still works. Try RadioDJ and PlayIt Live first; both have free starting points. Check Spacial's site for the current SAM Broadcaster price.
Is there a cloud version of SAM Broadcaster?
Yes, SAM Cloud. Silver is $30 a month with 120 listeners at 128 kbps and 5 additional DJs.
Can I use these tools on a Mac?
Mixxx and BUTT run natively on macOS. For automation, the practical Mac answer is server-based or browser-based: AzuraCast or RadioHost Studio, with no Windows machine required.
Will switching playout software affect my listeners or website?
Not if the stream server stays the same: players and websites keep working. If you move to a new host as well, the stream URL changes and your website player needs the new address.
